No two ways about it, they made me feel important and missed.
Their friendship and caring, and the concern they expressed, made me feel like I matter. Some of the best medicine - EVER!
Golly, it was a long day, and I am not too proud to admit I am pooped. I also have a feeling it will be an awfully long week. There is a lot of overdue work in my inbox, many requests that need tending to, and still the 100% verifications to contend with. Sorted through the glut of tasks and made myself a game plan for the next few days.
Was not surprised to learn the new QC Eng did not pick up any slack, nor did the WH Lead, who had a huge hand in creating/allowing the mislabeling debacle.
A reminder for myself and my sons that you cannot - MUST not - stand in one spot too long. Do not become complacent with adequacy, nor be satisfied with just getting by when you have more to achieve and SO much more to offer. Do not fear... you must begin.

Normalcy?
I will be returning to work on the third of June, whether I feel up to it or not. Been sitting (and lying) with my eyes closed - or open '...but not engaged in any activity requiring them to focus or concentrate' for the better part of the last two weeks.
Can you say boring?
Headaches, double-vision, and naps have been near-constant companions, and I believe returning to work so quickly after leaving the hospital was a mistake. Two full days of staring at and comparing numbers on labels, and working at my computer, did more harm than good. No job is worth my vision, it is too precious to lose.
Contrary to popular belief, this was not a vacation, it was a period of recuperation - and no, I am not fully functional. I am now instructed by the GP to begin weaning myself back on to a diet of eyes open, looking at the telly, reading a book, and using my PC to answer email, etc., to get my eyes used to what is to come after a long break from use.
Holy crap, people, take care of your health. Oh, and is there anyone out there on Atorvistatin? Are you experiencing any issues while taking the medication? I have to admit I feel a little ill at ease at the thought of taking it once I read all of the possible side effects.

Well, that's me, then
May 19th... the day I had my heart attack. The day my unstable angina sat up and proclaimed its power. It was rude and sneaky and surprising, and not my favorite way to spend a morning - or that night - and on into the next day.
Once I arrived at the ER, blood was drawn to measure troponin levels, and that carried on every few hours. Yes, every few hours throughout the remainder of the day AND all that night. I must admit to having a favorite phlebotomist through it all, though; I detested when her shift ended and the replacement appeared. Even when the preferred vein closed down and she had to move to a new location, Elizabeta made the procedure a piece of cake. The replacement was horrible, and created way more holes than she ever managed to siphon blood from.
Ah, well. Water under the bridge.
When I fell, though, at home (I passed out trying to walk to the living room), Karl did his best to keep me from hitting the floor (no mean feat, that). I managed to hit my head twice, however.
The first blow resulted from a rollicking bounce - I impacted his bedroom door frame with my left shoulder, then slammed backwards unexpectedly into the other side of the frame... and met that with my head. Karl's description of what happened immediately after is a little chaotic, but he says I continued to shuffle forward, becoming more and more wobbly.
Somehow the migration to the front room carried on in a somewhat forward fashion, until I seemed to crumple in his arms. Karl said he heard what he took for snoring coming from me, until he smelled something like vomit and realized my head was bent in an uncomfortable angle to my neck and shoulders. That's when I slipped through his arms and 'found' the floor. Yup, you guessed it, my head hit another wooden surface, and Karl needlessly apologized several times (after I came to) for that accident. He tried to soften the blow, but I was a lot of human heading to the ground with gravity on my side.
Soon enough he realized I wasn't breathing "well," and forcefully jerked me to a sitting position when rolling me to my side didn't work. It wasn't long thereafter that I came to and we discussed what had just happened... because I 'wasn't there'.
Just so you know, I don't hold Karl responsible in any way for the concussion - which went undiagnosed by the ER team - and everyone on the Cardiac Unit - despite my descriptions of the bizarre auditory occurrence (thousands of locusts loudly buzzing... while on fire), the louder than usual ringing in my ears, the non-stop headache, the room pitching madly whilst I am still, being light-headed, and a very steady double vision in my right eye.
You should also know this all may have happened due to a good deal of stress over the recent results (just the week before) of a CT showing an "apple core" shape in my ascending colon.
Oh, yeah, probably should do a little filling in. Re-cap of the untold:
- Had significant, escalating discomfort for a couple weeks which felt like a hernia (not an unfamiliar sensation);
went to doctor.
- Told by physician it was not a hernia and most likely appendicitis;
was sent for CT scan to see how inflamed appendix was.
- CT showed long appendix, but no issues there (and no hernia); but
doc overly concerned by "apple core" appearance, so sent for GI consult and colonoscopy.
All of this had me on the edge of my seat - but more about the pooper chute stuff another time.
I feel God is using the universe as a two-by-four to get my eyes open wide, and to get me heading in the direction I have been side-stepping/avoiding/ignoring/wasting time by denying for far too long. I can only imagine Him sitting up there, shaking His head in disbelief and smacking His forehead in frustration, while I continue to avoid my destiny in cunningly stupid, and innocently disbelieving ways.
Maria, we need to talk. For now, I need to stop this typing and shut my eyes again. I am supposed to be resting them to try and get a handle on the healing process from the recent brain injury.

Really, 2018?
Not guilty! I did NOT say - or even think - "what else can happen?" Did NOT say or think, "it can't get any worse/how bad can it get?"
I let 2017 wimper on out and ignored the midnight tolling of the bells. And this is the thanks I get.
We are going visiting today, and I asked Karl to jump into the shower while I punched down the bread dough and parsed it into the baking pans for its second rise. I had a load of laundry going and was feeling pretty content.
I heard the sound of water, but it didn't register that the sound was a bit out of the ordinary for the washer (downstairs). Nope, I chalked it up to Karl in the tub. (yea - no arguments or demanding or repeating myself for a change).
Then Karl breezed by and headed to the lower level to check on the wash - thinking he would take it out of the washer and get it into the dryer, in hopes of wearing one of the dress shirts in the load. This day was getting better and better.
Then Karl yelled up to me, "Is the floor supposed to be wet?"
Nope, oddly enough, it isn't supposed to be wet.
How fast do you think I flew downstairs?
It looks as though the pipe that the washer drains into froze... that is to say, whatever standing water was in it from the last wash before this extreme cold snap. The sound I heard and did not identify was that of the water splashing about at high pressure and fanning out on the wood floor and soaking into the insulation underneath. At least, I am HOPING the drain pipe is the issue.
Damn it!
Well, at least the bread smells good in the oven.

The word "get" has got to go
What is with the ignorance of people using the English language?
I have a lot of pet peeves. This I know and, well....whatever.
However, I feel compelled to tell the universe how I feel regarding the lack of ability (within the general population) to correctly use the English language in an intelligent and thoughtful way. Let's face it, embrace it, and erase it - the funk of the grammatically lazy, that is. When did mediocrity become the norm?
Has anyone else even noticed that the practice of intelligent speaking has truly taken a nose dive over the last 10-20 years. 'I mean', just listen to us!
Let's try this:
"...absorbs us from the inside until we are consumed by it and become comfortable with repetitive patterns..."
Quite frankly, there are a small number of ways that sentence could have been better constructed, but it wasn't. Don't even get me started on the poor punctuation. [slow burn]
Sadly, the lazy and improper use of language is becoming more disappointing with every passing year. The word "get" has found its way into most sentences any more, when so many other perfectly suited words would do a much better job communicating, informing, and delivering content. What are we so afraid of that we can't even hire people to type up news stories on television for our 'talking heads' to say in front of a camera? Or, are our newscasters presenting the news in a rogue fashion, and they themselves can't construct a proper sentence?
It's horrifying to know there are horrible English students (with deplorable speaking habits) wending their way through college and gaining accreditation to teach young, pliable minds. Once youngsters are subjected to these new lazy and improperly speaking teachers, who's left to reverse the damage? Who will monitor the decline of intelligence and work to reverse it? There are an equal amount of parents who also speak poorly, so there will be no help for the coming generations of kids to recognize the issues and reverse the trend.
How are we to "life hack" our way out of this trouble? MacGyver has retired.
Oh, and, PS:
Don't blame your mobile phone (or other electronic device) for messing up a conversation and inadvertently causing issues due to its "spellcheck" feature, if you are the sort of lazy idiot who can't be bothered to even attempt to spell a word correctly - or remember the correct uses for "your", "you're", "their", "they're", and "there" (among others). But these are matters for another time and place.

- Lazy speech patterns
- The overuse of words in sentences taking the place of "um" and "uh" and the rest - specifically the words "like" and "so", and the phrase "I mean"....when the speaker hasn't even said anything of note requiring clarification
- Saying "hashtag" to bring an air of importance to some trivial subject matter
- Inventing other uses for a word(s), when it isn't necessary, to get the meaning across; i.e. - a "life hack" is NOT the same as a tip or shortcut or a unique solution share
- The needless (and stupid) use of certain other words to shortcut the need for inserting a little grey matter into the conversation - which is why I am here today
This is how routine affects us; absorbs us from the inside until we get consumed by it and get comfortable with repetitive patterns and accept changes along the way.Seriously?!

Irritation
My most immediate gripe is of my composition instructor.
Karl has the same course with a different professor, and this dude (Karl's 'Prof N') is as incredibly prompt (and terrific) at communication as my composition dude is irresponsible and lackluster. They couldn't be any more diametrically opposed if they tried. My instructor either never checks his email, or checks it and ignores it for days at a stretch before responding, OR likes playing the "eenie-meanie-miney-moe" game with whatever class email he receives.
A full week ago I wrote to ask if he was able to view my essay submission in the screwed up application the college has decided to utilize for torturing students, er....make that "use as an instructional aide to enhance the class syllabus and face-to-face time." What a high-falutin' crock! Too many bugs in the system, and if someone (like myself) hasn't got an updated version of Windows, that damned thing won't work from your home computer! In fact, if you don't possess the latest and greatest software enabled laptop, iPad, etc., you can't do your homework from home! That is, unless you go to the extreme of spending another pile of money to buy the latest version of Windows to replace the non-upgradeable Vista that was (the only thing) available when [I] purchased my laptop in 2009.
That's right, I've had my current computer/laptop for more than four years!!! I'm not a lemming with a small anything complex (I also don't have a never-ending pile of cash under my mattress to blow on new hardware and phones and other gadgets). And look at me, I'm still breathing and functioning!
I'm happy (odd choice of words) to report that I am not the only person in class experiencing issues with the stupid MyWritingLab app/software/reporting tool, so I have been vindicated. The stupidest test of the MWL product came when I went to the campus library during a break to upload my essay from their computers. That's right, the MRL tool wasn't recognized by the school system! I was asked for permission to allow a "pop-up" to use the system. Then, the program had bugs beyond the firewall issue.....so HUGE RASPBERRIES to the new tool to make a lazy instructor's life easier! Hey, teachers - get yourself an email account students can utilize to submit their assignments via email - WITHOUT ALL THE DAMNED HOOPS!!
[pant, pant, pant]
I submitted it twice from different computers, and I have no idea if he ever saw the essay while in the precious MWL program. Jean submitted it from her Mac, where she saw the item snugly tucked into the "shared documents" folder, AND she could view it there, too. She even took a page image and we sent that to the instructor to show the document as having been in the system since the 4th of October! But when I queried whether he could view the document as sent via the library computer to the same program destination, I never received the courtesy of a reply!
[expletive, EXPLETIVE, EXPLETIVE]
Yes, I think it's safe to say I am a tad irritated.

Opinions
Does anyone else out there happen to think the new offering from PBS and the BBC is a load of shyte? If you haven't been watching "The Paradise" on Sunday evenings, you aren't missing much. No kidding. What a load of Hallmark-style twaddle. All soft soap and drivel, truly.
They keep billing every new thing as the next best thing to Downton Abbey. Hardly!
The thing I am having the roughest time with is deciding which horrendous piece of wanna-be crap is worse - that Masterpiece thing with Jeremy Piven about the American who went to London at the turn of the last century to develop an all-encompassing department store (horrible from the writing to the abominable acting), OR the unbelievably dull, saccharine, flem-inducing 'Paradise.' Please don't make me give you a plot rundown. It's bad - that's all you need to know, and I'm afraid that thinking about it may cause an aneurysm.
Come on, PBS/BBC, we KNOW you can do better than these offerings. Don't be in such a rush to fill the time slot during the DA hiatus that you resort to lackluster and below standard knock-off productions. Downton is one of a kind. Bring back Doc Martin or Foyle's War (the original)...or even Inspectors Morse or Lewis, before parading another poor imitation period piece in place of glorious Downton Abbey.
For shame!

One of 'those' kinds of days
For whatever reason, I find myself having "one of 'those' kinds of days," and it is distressing. It cropped up out of nowhere and I can't seem to shake it.
My day seems to have come complete with a headache, too, so you'll excuse me if I take a day to indulge in a project that has been weighing heavily in my "really want to do" column, and just ignore all else. Well, everything except the cat box, that is.

On the matter of "Infinite frustration"
Brian graciously attempted the sequence to register/login to the online homework management site used by the local jr. college (provided by my instructor) with his BRAND NEW LAPTOP tablet-thingy, and the minute we accessed the Pearson website, his machine turned into an unresponsive black screen!!!

Infinite frustration
Yes...I have tried for 2.75 days, now, to register and log into the online homework-teacher-made-a-change-to-the-syllabus site WITHOUT LUCK!!!! All I've managed to accomplish was a heightened degree of frustration and very little homework. Every try with a different computer elicited the same basic outcome - a crash of either the IE or the entire PC.
So...HELLO!!!!!! I hate the idea of having to sit in a computer lab on campus for extra hours just to complete homework I should be able to do AT HOME!!!
College is beginning to suck as badly as technology.
Somebody fix it so I may amend my mental state and opinion of technology. *Thanks*
[grumble grumble]

For you relatives who drop in occasionally
My mom asked me to write a handful of folks (relatives) to let them know how she was doing, and to also inform them that she would be offline and fairly unreachable by phone for a bit.
So I did this.
I was to let them know she wouldn't be jumping to her feet to answer the phone, and that sitting at her PC to correspond would be next to impossible for her (for the foreseeable future). I was to let them know this so they wouldn't be worried or offended or upset should they not receive responses from her in a timely fashion.
Well, I did it in my way, BCC-ing those on the list. It's just what I do (a holdover from my corporate days), and apparently some peoples took this as a personally pointed message - an affront, if you will. Their panties are in a bunch and mom is probably on a couple of poop lists because of it.
Well...I'm sorry!
If you're ticked off, if you're a little honking mad at my messages, well...then blame me, and leave mom out of your nasty little blah, blah, wah, wah sessions. Do what one person did and respond with a nastygram to me. I can handle it, and it's totally my issue anyhow.
But g e e z, try a little understanding and stop taking everything so personally maybe, will ya? The world doesn't revolve around you, because it's too busy in my orbit. [schmarmy sarcasm intended]

Catching up
I took the time yesterday to finish the paint job I began last week (before leaving to stay with mom), but ended up in tears.
Everything was moving along fine, then I began to peel the tape at the wall junctions and at the ceiling. Yup, you guessed it! The paint came of in large pieces along the ceiling, and by the time I could get it to stop, several inches were gone! Today will be a day of cleaning up the edges with a blade; using plaster to fill in and smooth it all over; sanding the dry compound; washing the wall down in those areas, then; priming the repaired spots and repainting.
Although, to be truthful with myself, the priming and painting will most likely happen tomorrow. Everything needs drying time, and I don't want any further issues with this paint job!!! Besides, there were also spots in the middle of the wall where it bubbled up and pealed, too, and those will need the same treatment. So I have enough to do with the filling and such to keep me from priming and painting today.
I don't know why this happened, since the first layer went on without any hitches or glitches - this just doesn't make any sense. It was/IS all very frustrating and disappointing, and I washed up everything in a flood of tears last night.
The boys had their own clean-up to attend to, since Hobbes lay down with her tail draped across the lid of the paint can! I couldn't believe it - the one time I grabbed the can to pour more paint in the tray and went right back to work without replacing the can lid!!! Really, Hobbes?!?!?!?
I'm still shaking my head over that one. I'll keep you updated on everything. Sadly. I won't get to move the furniture to it's experimental spots, but that's the breaks I s'pose. Of course, it also means there will be a further delay in hanging the art back on the walls and getting the new quilt pole hung as well.
[heavy sigh]

[panic scream]
My lovely little quilt arrived at the UPS hub in Hodgkins, IL, by 8:51AM Saturday morning -- but hasn't budged an inch since!
Do I need to be worried?
Do I get money back if they do not live up to their delivery claim? If they fail to meet the delivery timeline THEY named and guaranteed?
I will drive to Hodgkins, IL if I have to!! That's a warning, UPS. A warning and a promise.

Well, what do you know.
In fear of jinxing it, but right now the blogger is working. Thank you, google - at long last.

Knowingly made the decision to not roll the AC unit into the house and set it up in the living room window this season, as we have for the past few years. Crazy, I know, but there were many factors involved in that thought process.
Despite the horrible grip of uber heat and humidity hovering over our state (much of the mid-western to eastern US, really), I have only had one moment of self doubt over that AC v no AC decision. Today is really day three of the latest heat wave, but day two with the added humidity. It's crippling, make no mistake, and weather weenie predictions have this hanging around until Friday or Saturday of this week.
We'll see. It's being called the "air you can wear." Very appropriate.
Anyhow, it's good to have space for writing again, but I need to move around before the heat becomes overly oppressive. We have found a rather busy nest of flying, sting-y things entering the house through a crack between the brick facing and old caulking where it meets the wood trim. Emptied a can of spray at them yesterday evening, but that only made a temporary dent in their activities....and hardly touched their numbers, I'm fearing.
I will keep you posted on that and so much more, but I bid you adieu for the time being.

FINALLY
Today the humtididdity (make that "humidity") is low enough to paint and finish the long wall I have been dying to complete (and then repair and paint) - since forever. However, I also absolutely must finish up a bit of quilting I've had to put off because of the recent sticky, crappy weather.
Aaaargh! I hate this sort of conundrum. I really must get after both of these activities since this lovely, workable weather won't be with us for long.
I am stymied by the lack of hours in a day.
Well, since I now have an appointment with a quilt appraiser in order to complete paperwork for my AQS entry, I suppose the quilting bit should take priority. And, I suppose I can live with the fact that I did manage to spend some time cleaning, dusting, sanding, cleaning again, taping off and mudding newly found areas of craptasticness along the wall to be painted, so I guess I really did manage to stick my mitts in the house repair stuff - even though it wasn't the actual applying of color that I so wanted to get to. [sniff]
Dagnabbit and darnitalmighty!
I now give myself permission to touch the quilting!

Oh, did I remember to say that one of my quilts made it into an AQS contest?!? Wahoo!!!!

Good news, bad news
It has been a l-o-n-g weekend.
It began last week, Wednesday, when Brian developed a monster headache. Just coming off of a nearly two-week-long combo respiratory/head thing (he still harbors the cough and stuffy nose), this headache crept in to stay.
Severe vomiting followed at a rate of two-to-three hours between each episode. The headache intensified over the next couple of days, and his biggest concern (for him) was lack of poo.
[amused exasperation] Kids.
OK, kids and 101-year-old ladies.
Finally, on Saturday afternoon, his appetite began to rear it's ugly head, so Bud ate a little here and a little there throughout the remainder of the day. Eventually, his relaxed upset stomach said "no thanks" in a very profound and noisy fashion.
That was 4:30AM Sunday.
Then the headache became aggressively painful, so we drove to an urgent care facility in town (which wasn't McClaren - they are the gov snydley of healthcare). For $90 this clinic gave him a shot of pain medication and two prescriptions to fill....oh, and a prescription for a CT.
Brian managed to sleep throughout a better portion of the night, waking less frequently then he had been, and no vomiting (thank you, God). He still required elevation to sleep, but his grade 8 headache is now a purring 3 classification (per his opinion), but it is now painful to have contact with the right side of his head. ?
Re: the CT - Once it's done, how long before someone reads the CT results and gets back with an answer, solution, opinion, diagnosis do you think?
[disgusted sigh] What a ride.
More later.

Cooties're everywhere!
Got home a little while ago, after having spent the morning teaching the last of a 2-part class for children (making a stuffed animal pillow. But not stuffed with real animals...that'd be cruel).
If you'd been looking in you would have noticed that these girls spent a good deal of time mining their noses instead of working at the project on the tables before them. Every time I turned around one of 'em had a finger strategically placed up a nostril. I was terrified to touch anything they had been working with, knowing full well I was going to draw back a handful of snot locker gems - whether they were of the crunchy or slimy variety.
I was squibbed out....feeling squiffy....nauseated....grossed out to the max....wishing I had rubber gloves.
I offered each one of them, in turn, a tissue - NOT the same tissue, mind you, and each declined saying they didn't need one. Are you kidding me?!
I just caught you (all) picking your noses, and you don't need a tissue!?!? Are you sure you don't need one? Do you WANT one?
The answer is:
Oh, YES. YOU. DO.
On the way home I drove to Kroger to return a brand new package of Thomas' Bagels, that amazingly were covered in mold! Yup. MOLD everywhere. The sell by date on the packaging stated February 21st...so why are they moldy so soon? I dunno. I only know (and cared) about getting the refund.
Stopped into a Little Caesars to pick up a pizza for Karl and myself to enjoy as a quick lunch-like treat. No cooking for me, and Karl would be satisfied and happy for a good long while (at least, that is, until dinnertime rolls around). Hey, five bucks for a pie is a deal!
The young man greeting me as I stepped through the 'za-hole door was clearing his throat and complaining about it feeling scratchy "and sorta like it's getting sore." [insert Home Alone scream here]
Instead of high-tailing it out the door (as I probably should have) I told him to go home and rest and drink LOTS of non-alcoholic fluids, along with taking an Airborne right away, and taking doses of cranberry tablets. Not juice, but capsules/pills/tablets. Ignore the label suggesting it's good for preventing/treating urinary tract infections, and start taking them with every meal and at bedtime. Works like a charm, especially so if you begin when the slightest irritations show themselves.
For the mommying advice we were rewarded with a buttered and Parmesan-covered crust on our pizza! It was extra delish! But, now I think I need to go take some Airborne and cranberry supplements.
Ish. :^b

Really?
Is there such a thing as "adult onset premenstrual migraines"?
[internet research and reading]
Yes, apparently there is such a thing, and it is less likely to occur in perimenopausal women, but it has been known to happen.
Well, crap!
