A reminder for myself and my sons that you cannot - MUST not - stand in one spot too long. Do not become complacent with adequacy, nor be satisfied with just getting by when you have more to achieve and SO much more to offer. Do not fear... you must begin.

Just trying to get sh!t done...
For instance: still trying to get rid of a very tenacious headache. Day two.
Attempting to finsh up the rough draft of my last essay for composition class.
Continuing to cut out something in the neighborhood of 1,200-1,500 one inch squares - all in some shade or tint of yellow.
Finally managed to find the correct combination of weather stripping to seal the gaps that had developed around the front door. The old seal did its duty over the last three or four years, but finally gave up the ghost. Noticed drafts, outdoor noises, and light coming in on two sides, so Brian made two trips to the hardware store (in as many days) to bring home the most adequate stripping available. Even then, it took some detailed trimming to finally make it all work. We can now shut the door without a fight, AND lock the deadbolt from the inside AND the outside, too!
11.30.2013
I said that I would
Then I remembered you people, and I remembered how insensitive and lackluster you have been all of this time. You want to be entertained and informed, but you don't want to say "hello" - at the very freaking least!
And this is not aimed at Maria or Jean - you ladies rock!
Nope, this rant is directed at the litany of others (many of whom are suspected petnappers and decidedly guilty SPAM artists).
If you can't be bothered to read the blog, get to know me, or offer pertinent, insightful musings in the comment field, why don't you just drop dead.
Thanks.

Oh, seriously?!
REALLY?

Huzzah!
I can understand her difficulties with the instructions and methodology, anyway. The directions (as supplied by JAF for a quilt class project) are pretty piss-poor as written, and are very wasteful to boot. Due to my understanding of quilitng - and knowledge of piecing (even without directions) - I could reason it through fairly quickly, DESPITE the included JAFBS.
Wasn't easy to stop myself though, let me confess that right now, and it is a design I can see some merit in repeating in order to make several simple reproductions (with variations) in many color schemes. I'll be able to sell these fast little projects at farmer's markets (and the like) in the coming months...perhaps even rent a space at the local art-in-the-park broohaha late next summer! Scraps, happiness and cash - can't beat it.
Anyhow, I now need to begin getting ready to head off and teach a little applique` tonight. Maybe I should take something for a headache now - pre-emptively nip it in the bud, eh?
Ugh
If you don't know what that means, you may wish to pick up a book and start reading!

Dropping like flies
Hobbes seems to have been the first one of us to fall, followed closely by Brian. 'Beana' (Hobbes to you uninitiated blog readers) is the eldest of our furry family members, and had a high metabolism which keeps her constantly hungry. Although, for all of the eating she does, she never tops anything more than five or six pounds on the scales - if THAT. Her cold keeps her sniffing throughout the day and night, snorking and wheezing; blowing little kitty snot-bubbles in an attempt to clear her nose. Usually, the snot-bubble events happen in the still of the night, as she lies next to me on our queen-sized bed - she, slumbering (or preening) at her pillow and me snoozing blissfully on mine. I am awakened at intervals of what seem to be half-hour to forty-five minutes apart, and then never fully allowed to fall back into anything remotely close to a deep sleep. She doesn't hate me, she just thinks it's amusing to play the part of the mist off Niagara Falls in my face.
A stuffy nose is no different for a cat in its discomfort or inconvenience level than it is for a human, but humans can adjust easily to mouth-breathing if we have to - cats don't like that practice at all. And Hobbes...well, Hobbes likes to share.
And her stuffiness makes eating a bit of a chore, too, so I am met with a lot of uneaten food in her bowl. Good thing her fluffy sister has no issue with poaching leftovers.
At any rate, Bud's illness began in the form of the annoying throat-clearing which only seems to raise my hackles - and my mommy alarms. By the time he was really "a-hem, uagh, a-hem, mgg-uaghing" enough to make me want to smack him with a two-by-four, it was too late to pre-emptively strike with Airborn or some other nip-it-in-the-bud OTC remedy. Nope, he was in for a bit of a sick spell; but it went from a headcold to his chest. Then that mucus-to-throat issue created vomit a-n-d now an ear infection to boot! Along the way, he also seemed to be bothered by chills and muscle aches just as the headcold appeared to abate, so I am flumuxed by this round of sick.
However, Karl began throat-clearing, drippy nose, and sore throat complaints two or three days ago, then developed the dreaded "D" yesterday, just to make it interesting. Last night he then began to complain of aches in his joints, a headache and chills...so off to bed he went!
The remaining two cats and I are keeping some distance where we can, and are avoiding touching tissues irresponsibly left around the domicile. Other than that, everyone is well.
Oh, except I seem to have a repeat of a nasty eye infection of my left eyelid - again! Second time inside of a month, and it seems to happen after teaching at the JAF. Gotta be kid cooties, eh? Hoping the swelling is gone by tomorrow, since it looks as though I lost a round to a boxer, and you can't put make-up on that.
Hope everyone is fairing better wherever you are.
Did you do it?
If you haven't, it's no big deal - just leave 'em be. In another six months or so it'll be the correct time again and all will be right in your world. I say show up everywhere an hour early and impress people!
;v)

End of the month
Last evening, the boys and I went to a DSO concert to hear the premiere of a new work by Danny Elfman. Well, it isn't really "new work" so much as a compilation of music from films he's scored for Tim Burton movies. Elfman and Burton put together a snapshot of images and film to go with the musical scores from fourteen Burton movies - and it was wonderful! There was even an 11-year-old male soloist and the Wayne State Choir to back the orchestra, which just added SO much to the program.
As I said, it premiered in Detroit last night, accompanied by people dressed as their favorite Tim Burton character. I would strongly suggest catching this program if it comes to an orchestra hall in your town. You won't be sorry you did.

Last night's dinner brought to us by Yumm and E !
I began with one large sweet potato, peeled, diced, and set to boil. While the spud was cooking, I measured off three healthy servings (and by "healthy", I mean overfull portions) of frozen broccoli and added about one cup of chopped spinach. Mind you, I buy a good deal of frozen veggies and use them in everything! We buy fresh, too, but frozen produce is a boon for cooking meals.
Once the brocco/spinach combo was steaming in the skillet, I added a spoonful or two of the sweet tater water to keep the green bits from scorching onto the pan. I cut one medium-size onion into a small rough chop, tossing it with a little butter into the same pan with the greens. When the onion began to look translucent I combined the entire lot and added a tad more water from the tuber 'bath'.
Tater cooked through? Yup, and so I removed it from the heat; drained off the water (pouring a little more into the veggie mix); placed the cooked chunks - and about 1/2 cup of remaining liquid - into a bowl and placed that in microwave to keep warm.
Washed pan and began saffron rice.
Added one jar of Trader Joe's Masala Simmering Sauce, and about 6 oz of water (with which I rinsed the jar) - of course - that all went into the vegetable mix and NOT the rice. Once this began to bubble, I turned the heat way down and added one can of chicken - YES! I said "can" (remember, I'm working out of my pantry). Chopped the chunks into smallish pieces and distributed it throughout the veggie mix. From there I added only a pinch or two of salt and a good grinding of black pepper.
With the rice still simmering, I finished prepping the yam by adding a pat of butter, about 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, a sprinkle of cinnamon, less than a sprinkle of clove, and a smidgen of nutmeg. One tiny pinch of sea salt and a grinding of fresh black pepper finished the seasonings, then I mashed the cubes by hand.
Voila! Dinner in two pans and almost no chopping, and it was GOOOOOOOOOD!!
You may now drool ~

Today is one of those cold, damp days of fall when I won't be able to put stuff on the clothesline out back. Instead, I will need to load up the old drier that came with the house and crank 'er up. Sadly, this old drier has just about seen its last days, and has sounded more and more like a cement mixer churning fifty-pounds of large, jagged rocks with every successive repair.
"We can make it heat to dry AND add a little more noise to the process for ya, lady. How's that sound?"
Yikes. And the tremendously sad thing is as loud as it sounds for me (from everywhere in the house), I hate turning it on when the girls cuddle up somewhere in the lower level for a day-long catnap, 'cuz I know how disruptive it would be for them.
Sheesh.

Irritation
Karl has the same course with a different professor, and this dude (Karl's 'Prof N') is as incredibly prompt (and terrific) at communication as my composition dude is irresponsible and lackluster. They couldn't be any more diametrically opposed if they tried. My instructor either never checks his email, or checks it and ignores it for days at a stretch before responding, OR likes playing the "eenie-meanie-miney-moe" game with whatever class email he receives.
A full week ago I wrote to ask if he was able to view my essay submission in the screwed up application the college has decided to utilize for torturing students, er....make that "use as an instructional aide to enhance the class syllabus and face-to-face time." What a high-falutin' crock! Too many bugs in the system, and if someone (like myself) hasn't got an updated version of Windows, that damned thing won't work from your home computer! In fact, if you don't possess the latest and greatest software enabled laptop, iPad, etc., you can't do your homework from home! That is, unless you go to the extreme of spending another pile of money to buy the latest version of Windows to replace the non-upgradeable Vista that was (the only thing) available when [I] purchased my laptop in 2009.
That's right, I've had my current computer/laptop for more than four years!!! I'm not a lemming with a small anything complex (I also don't have a never-ending pile of cash under my mattress to blow on new hardware and phones and other gadgets). And look at me, I'm still breathing and functioning!
I'm happy (odd choice of words) to report that I am not the only person in class experiencing issues with the stupid MyWritingLab app/software/reporting tool, so I have been vindicated. The stupidest test of the MWL product came when I went to the campus library during a break to upload my essay from their computers. That's right, the MRL tool wasn't recognized by the school system! I was asked for permission to allow a "pop-up" to use the system. Then, the program had bugs beyond the firewall issue.....so HUGE RASPBERRIES to the new tool to make a lazy instructor's life easier! Hey, teachers - get yourself an email account students can utilize to submit their assignments via email - WITHOUT ALL THE DAMNED HOOPS!!
[pant, pant, pant]
I submitted it twice from different computers, and I have no idea if he ever saw the essay while in the precious MWL program. Jean submitted it from her Mac, where she saw the item snugly tucked into the "shared documents" folder, AND she could view it there, too. She even took a page image and we sent that to the instructor to show the document as having been in the system since the 4th of October! But when I queried whether he could view the document as sent via the library computer to the same program destination, I never received the courtesy of a reply!
[expletive, EXPLETIVE, EXPLETIVE]
Yes, I think it's safe to say I am a tad irritated.
Opinions
They keep billing every new thing as the next best thing to Downton Abbey. Hardly!
The thing I am having the roughest time with is deciding which horrendous piece of wanna-be crap is worse - that Masterpiece thing with Jeremy Piven about the American who went to London at the turn of the last century to develop an all-encompassing department store (horrible from the writing to the abominable acting), OR the unbelievably dull, saccharine, flem-inducing 'Paradise.' Please don't make me give you a plot rundown. It's bad - that's all you need to know, and I'm afraid that thinking about it may cause an aneurysm.
Come on, PBS/BBC, we KNOW you can do better than these offerings. Don't be in such a rush to fill the time slot during the DA hiatus that you resort to lackluster and below standard knock-off productions. Downton is one of a kind. Bring back Doc Martin or Foyle's War (the original)...or even Inspectors Morse or Lewis, before parading another poor imitation period piece in place of glorious Downton Abbey.
For shame!

What a nice break from the routine
After teaching a class Friday evening, I hot-footed it up to Jean's for an overnight girl-gab-and-sewing-session, which became a jaunt to East Lansing on Saturday for sushi with the adorable, wish-we-had-one-like-him boyfriend of one of her daughters. Jean began the day by making us berry smoothies at breakfast :) then her sister, Anne, drove down from Traverse City to join us Saturday, and brought lunch with her - and it was delicious! Freshly homemade pita bread with homemade chicken salad (including spinach and homegrown basil), AND homegrown tomatoes to top it off! Soooo tasty! Thank you, Anne!
We ended the day with sushi for dinner and voila! "Perfect" doesn't really even come close to describing the whole thing. [contented sigh]
I drove home after that to work with Karl on his essay. He needs a lot of pushing and pulling and cajoling, and I hate feeling as though I abandon him (even though I know he needs to be more independent overall). When it comes to sinking or swimming, even though I know I give it my all, I still feel somehow that I push Karl under with a stick if I don't help lead him to shore (with regards to homework).
Anyway, we made a little progress before turning in last night, but now I feel like I could have stayed and played one more night with the girls and gotten Karl to about the same place today if I'd come home after breakfast instead of last evening. Ah well. If nothing else, at least I got the cat box cleaned out (and the puddle off the floor). That was necessary, too.

**The things dreams are made of
A few weeks ago I tasked myself with the necessary chore of cleaning out my email inboxes (due, in part, to some accounts having accumulated well over one-thousand emails). During the ensuing weeks I managed to wittle down and cull out several hundred email pieces from each of two major email accounts. Phwew!
As luck would have it I found an email exchange in which I was describing my joy at having narrowed down my choices in paint color for the long wall that spans my living room and part of the kitchen. It seems my desire (even in 2010) was to use a dark (purple) color over the long expanse. I also jibbered on about my insane desire and determination to finish the entire chore by the beginning of October....2010! This all included finishing the plastering, the sanding, the taping, etc,. then actually buying the paint and painting.
I was amazed to find it has only taken me 2.10 years to actually jump in and get it all done! I'm improving.
[you need to know i am rolling on the floor, convulsing with laughter]
The way I look at it now: **I only need to get the other paint colors to finish the living room walls and move into the kitchen (eventually). Oh, crap! And the darned ceiling. [groan]

Yes...my beautiful carpet is home!
Nothing about today's trip was any different. Bud went with me, as I was determined to not lose my cool, and we inspected the rug (on hands and knees, as always) and found all the same spots lacking repair! We marked them, took photos as we stood in the showroom, then I signed for the rug and registered a complaint - both written on the invoice AND voiced to the gentleman who always handled me with care when I visited my carpet.
Now, I am conducting a campaign to warn people to not take any repairs to the "purple truck people." Whatever it takes - signs in my car window, internet announcements, FB-spread-the-word-tactics, advertisements in local papers and signs posted on lightpoles. ANYthing and EVERYthing. I am even ready to call the troubleshooters for two of the local news outlets, just to give the purple H a black eye. Tomorrow I am contacting the BBB first, then see which way the wind blows me.

Wow and huh
Thank you, friends, strangers, occasional readers, and spammers.
Two items of note
I found my rock!
My peace stone...I found it! And wouldn't you know it would be in the last place I looked. ;) I added that last bit for mom.
*Happiness*
Number two -
When my cats have the hiccups I hate that I am curious enough (and unemployed enough) to watch closely - and for whatever time is necessary - to ascertain whether I: missed the previous funny bodily implosion upheavals; got in on the beginning, and I will be viewing the entire show, or; witnessed a burp and not the advent of kitty hiccups.
Hey, I didn't say they would be two brilliant "...items of note," only that there was something I had taken note of.

One of 'those' kinds of days
My day seems to have come complete with a headache, too, so you'll excuse me if I take a day to indulge in a project that has been weighing heavily in my "really want to do" column, and just ignore all else. Well, everything except the cat box, that is.

The only certainty about MI weather
Here we are, nearing the first full week down in October, and the weather is a balmy mess. Last several days have been 80* (or near eighty), and each morning for the past four days I've awakened to discover that rain had fallen sometime in the wee hours. This morning it was still gently falling, and I know the temps will rise once more into the eighty-degree range.
None of this is a complaint, just stating the facts, ma'am.
The trees (and other leafy green things), on the other hand, are as confused as they can be. Makes me wonder what the prognostication for the coming winter weather is, and how winter will actually roll over us this time around.
Guess time will tell, but for now may I suggest we all get outdoors and start enjoying what's left of summer! The weather could't be any more perfect. For my part, I will be teaching two classes today, deep inside a large building, with no outdoor contact. [sniff]

It's one of those neat 'nature' things...I guess
From my kitchen window I watch the advance of new spring growth starting about late-April-early-May, and I wonder how full it will it get; how long will it extend this year? Every year - EVERY year - since planting it, I've watched and wondered. And every year I'm treated to a wonderful show. Of course, I never forget to thank the Creator and Mother Nature for the bounty.
The oddity of my lovely floral show this season was that the flowers began opening on the first day of September, and by October first, the show was over. [snapping fingers] Just like that. Now, I will stand at the window and stare at my empty wave of green, missing my spectacular, over-abundant spray of flowers, and I will wait for next spring. But I know there's promise in the waiting.
Thank you, Lord.
10.02.2013
Heh!
Of course, whomever it was left no message. Of course, that shouldn't be an 'of course"...it should be a 'WTF?!' Why would you phone someone and NOT leave a message? If it was important enough to call, then there must be something you wanted to say.
"Well, it could've been a wrong number, and they figured that out when they heard your outgoing message," you bellow in my direction. Hey, if that's the case then, at least leave a little message akin to "sorry for the misdial" so I don't go on wondering all day.
I either get a lot of misdials, or I know a lot of stupid people.
I'm just sayin'.
I may come back in here in a little bit and post the number for grins and giggles. We'll see.

Post-P.S
Yes, I turned down another film. Same ol' same ol': 'turds wouldn't respond to important questions such as what would be my daily rate? Also, the Production Coordinator knew absolutely nothing at this late date as far as schedule items (like: of a five-day work week, what are the standing days off?). Did they have a locked script? Nope, but here's version 14 of the (as yet) unfinished work...'enjoy'.
Um, can't line an 'unlocked' script if it's so up in the air that there are multiple changes to it every day.
In addition to all of that, I had received no paperwork - no contract, no NDA, no W2s...no nothin' - so I sent a "no-thanks" email yesterday. Yes, it broke my heart (a little), but I have things going on that I would have had to juggle and allocate to others, and fix, and so on, so it would have been a pain-in-the-end right up to the first minute of rolling camera.
It's better this way.
[yeah, beth, just keep muttering that to yourself over and over - eventually, you'll believe it]
9.25.2013
Hello, again
Heh heh...television humor.
The big news of the week is of course - Brian's 27th birthday! 27! :vO His birthday gift to me was a haircut (his, not mine), and my gift to him was a beautiful pair of woolen socks to wear with his kilt. Hey, those bad boys are hard to come by, and are expensive. Karl bought him a large bottle of clove-infused mead after having tried it at the Renfest. Happy birthday, Brian!
School is progressing about as you'd expect. Comp I for me is going well; for Karl, it's a bit more challenging - but he seems to have a good instructor. Mr. Quincy is (so far) diligent in responding to email, and genuinely seems to care that I want Karl to succeed, and is willing to help through open communication and getting copies of notes from class to K. [insert excited, happy face here]
On the other hand, Web Design is really kicking my keester. It doesn't help that my retrograde PC (and it's outdated IE program - which I can't upgrade past IE9 in order to do the work at home) is conspiring against me. Today I will head into the lab for a couple of hours to avail myself of the tutor and the working program there. [this calls for a cheer and an "oh, crap"]
Maria is enrolled in four classes this semester - GOOD ON YA, M! I would be too, but I waited too late. Although, it's probably a good thing I get my feet wet and ease back into this sort of school work. It's not like Specs was....not by a long shot. This is REAL work, eh? I am proud of you, Maria, keep up the good work!!
Jean is now in her second year of that radiology program (YEA!), and seems to be taking more of it in stride - I think. She is a wonder, because it's a lot of work and practicum on top of it! Plus, she's working one to two days (l o n g days) per week in a radiology facility on top of it! I know it's stretching you thin, lady, but you are a champ!
Mom is mending well, the issues with swelling and pain are subsiding. It's a good thing! Thank you, Lord. And, she still has PBS on her rabbit-eared TV, so is happier than not. It's not the same as seeing some regular network programming and her favorite "Wheel" and "Jeopardy" shows, but PBS is great when that's all there is. And that's WAY better than the alternative "reality TV" BS now offered 70% of the time on the other four channels (which she can't see).
As for me, well...I am the slacker in the group, I suppose. I am teaching somewhere in the neighborhood of two classes a week (the ones that don't cancel due to low enrollment), and taking my own piddily two classes. Pfft. Yes, still sewing when I get a moment here and there, just not enough of those moments any more.
OK, so enough of this for a bit. I need to get cleaned up and ready to meet with the tutor. I'm gonna learn me some web designin'. Hooo-doggies!

Happenings
- Spent a good portion of yesterday assembling twenty (yes, 20!) new batting patches for crazy quilt stockings...from scraps! Some will be used for backing older finished stocking fronts (to complete six or so old projects), but most are for new stockings - fronts and backs!
- Layed out one new stocking to crazy quilt (also yesterday).
- Cleaned up some fabric piles which had been laid aside quite a while ago, clearing off surface space and jump-starting the whole stocking frenzy.
- Sacked up two whole bags of paper to deliver to the recycling skiff at a local school.
- Worked on homework.
- Encouraged Karl to work on his composition homework.
- Accomplished a little laundry...not enough, admittedly, but there is some clean laundry. Maybe will produce more today, yet. Nyah!
- Looked for employment; applied to two potential ads.
- Wrote several letters (in email) to mom.
- Attended classes.
- Schlepped Karl back-and-forth to his class.
- Instructed a couple of classes - in fact, I have one to lead tonight.
- Vacuumed, dishes, etc.
- Attended Renaissance festival with Karl and a dear friend.
How are things at your end of the bog? [yawn]

Missing out
I miss certain people I looked forward to seeing and chatting with five days a week - certain (true) friends.
I miss John Wayne...Katherine Hepburn - and Audrey Hepburn.
I miss Harry Chapin
I miss Harry Nilsson.
Thank you for not being dead, Harry Connick, Jr.
I miss my grandpa Schaffer (more than I can say).
I missed out on having a dad - but I don't miss the person I knew as 'dad.'
I miss sharing things with my great-grandma Biddle.
I miss the idea of planning (then taking) a really neat trip to someplace new and far off.
I don't miss being a size ten, but I wouldn't mind finding size twelve (or, even size fourteen, come to that).
I miss the boys being small and cuddly and curious.
I'm sure I missed something, but this covers most of it.

Infinite frustration
So...HELLO!!!!!! I hate the idea of having to sit in a computer lab on campus for extra hours just to complete homework I should be able to do AT HOME!!!
College is beginning to suck as badly as technology.
Somebody fix it so I may amend my mental state and opinion of technology. *Thanks*

Oh, yeah. I agree...avoid the rush if you can.
Laziest nation - EVER!
9.01.2013
And, not for nothin'....
Several classes, both teaching and taking.
Been gone, but don't suppose ya noticed
No one is going to read [whatever], and the even more distressing and disappointing thought is that most readers would simply skim and absorb next to nothing of what I had to say (as apparently they [YOU] have been), and then never comment. So, I resorted to making very trite entries over the last few months.
My friends do occassionally comment (and I thank you most sincerely, you lovely people - all two of you), but by and large, I am disheartened by the readership numbers versus the commentors. I can safely say 98.9% of the comments are nothing but SPAM, and it makes the disappointment that much more palpable day after day.
I don't require the attention to survive, but if I am being honest with myself, I guess I am blown away by the fact that others blog and garner craploads of comments for seemingly no good reason. Quilt bloggers I have seen have many followers, and every entry receives some sort of feedback. What I don't understand is why I don't get anything by way of feedback; no greetings, compliments, criticisms, suggestions, questions, etc. You get the idea.
I get SPAM for the most part. And not even RELEVANT SPAM. It lacks intelligence; it insults my intelligence, and; it wastes my time.
It has also made me curmudgeonly and bitter, and you 98.9% people aren't worth it any more. You will not be allowed to drill in on my psyche and my self worth any more, so don't be surprised if you decide to look in on the blog one day and find you have no access. If you don't care enough to make an effort (even a little bit of one) why the hell should I?
That's right.....YOU SUCK! - you 98.9%. So put that in your bag of thoughtlessness and carry it around for a while. And while you're at it....bite me! If your readership is lost over this entry, as you can plainly tell, it wouldn't matter in the least. What difference would it make at this point?
Let's see if you respond to this. I am betting there won't be anything of value, one way or the other, left in the comments any time in the next month. If this is so, then you will have more time on your internet-trolling calendar very soon.
Congratulations.

Go figure
Their rooms are right under the attic fan we use to cool down the house, and over the last few days (and throughout this heat wave) we have utilized the lovely old beast to its full potential. Bliss!
Still, I can't understand (even after several discussions) why neither of them flipped the switch on the fan once they began to shiver sometime during the night; nor why they left their ceiling fans on; nor why they didn't simply slide their windows shut while they lie in bed freezing.
Go figure.
But I'll go you one better. I got up to 'fix' things, and found I needed to turn on the floor fans in the lower level and in the living room despite the lovely 65*F throughout the house. Without the circulation happening from the large attic fan, I was not as comfortable as I would have thought - even with a steady sixty-five degrees!
Go figure....indeed.

For you relatives who drop in occasionally
So I did this.
I was to let them know she wouldn't be jumping to her feet to answer the phone, and that sitting at her PC to correspond would be next to impossible for her (for the foreseeable future). I was to let them know this so they wouldn't be worried or offended or upset should they not receive responses from her in a timely fashion.
Well, I did it in my way, BCC-ing those on the list. It's just what I do (a holdover from my corporate days), and apparently some peoples took this as a personally pointed message - an affront, if you will. Their panties are in a bunch and mom is probably on a couple of poop lists because of it.
Well...I'm sorry!
If you're ticked off, if you're a little honking mad at my messages, well...then blame me, and leave mom out of your nasty little blah, blah, wah, wah sessions. Do what one person did and respond with a nastygram to me. I can handle it, and it's totally my issue anyhow.
But g e e z, try a little understanding and stop taking everything so personally maybe, will ya? The world doesn't revolve around you, because it's too busy in my orbit. [schmarmy sarcasm intended]

That was an experience
There were SO many quilts, not just the contest-involved quilts, but three or four additional collections to view. Then there were the vendors; one for every brand of long arm machine available on the market, and three-hundred others! What did they sell, you ask. Well, if you can imagine it, and it has anything to do with quilting, sewing, needlework of all kinds (and some crafting, bleh), then it was there!
The biggest thrill was obviously seeing my "Peace Quilt 1" hanging on display, and I probably spent a good deal of my time just listening to the comments of others and watching them take photos of it.
Don't know that I will enter many more contests in the future, but I will make my way to see more in the future.

Usually this only happens in the spring around mating season, but apparently the lil' varmints have decided to give it another go for the year. (?)

Rhymes with....
Greater MI disappointments
I guess I've always known I could count on being let down by my MI relatives - e v e r y time.
You know that story, "Man Without a Country"? Well, I am a woman without a family. Good to know I have some things I can truly always count on.
Some people have probably just realized (or not) that they've been eliminated from the ol' FB page. Happy day for you all! Merry Christmas.

If wishes were fishes
However, I wonder:
If wishes were fishes, does that mean my garage would be full of fish? I mean, if every time someone wished for something - anything - would they still only get a fish?

You Nancy Sinatra devotees will get the musical reference
by sayin' somethin' stupid like...
...the weather's been nice."
[kicks over a chair on the way out of the room]
Yes, more weather-driven blogging
It's even been cool enough to annoy the mosquito population! Take that, you bloodsuckers!
Time has passed s-l-o-w-l-y for me following the shipping of my beloved PQ1 to Paducah, KY. In little less than one week, my quilt will be on display to the world (essentially) - after all this time! I am excited, nervous, hopeful, fearful, failing-blase'. I am going to relish next Saturday for the milestone marker in my life that it will be!
I hope some of you will be able to make it to Grand Rapids, MI to see the AQS International QuiltWeek Contest and Show at the DeVos Showplace. You'd better believe I will be there!
And now, back to the weather.

Challenges
I was neither of those; I asked whether or not I could hyphenate my answer - because one word was not going to accomplish the task.
Disappointing.
Underwhelming.
Philanderer (although "cheater" sounds clearer).
Abusive.
Drunkard.
Hurtful.
Lackluster.
Unfaithful.
Serial liar.
Uncommited.
Thoughtless.
Those are the most immediate thoughts which popped into my mind, but a more fitting word would be "regretful".
No, he has/had no regrets - rather, the regret is on my part.
I regret having continued with the marriage past the birth of my first son; I regret allowing my inlaws to sway my feelings to the point of closing my eyes to the big/bigger issues (a familial history of drinking to excess); I regret wanting to believe his lies and excuses when caught redhanded with evidence of cheating; I regret allowing myself to feel guilt with thoughts of leaving him to begin a happier life (which I should have done sooner); I regret marrying him in the first place, and not insisting upon one of several other options we could have embarked on (and no, abortion was not one of those).
So many regrets. More than I've listed here. More than I care to indulge in here, but this would be my list of words, any one of them appropriate, but not enough. Not completely, at any rate, but "regretful" comes closest, I suppose.
I am trying to put him out of my mind, trying to make up for lost time, trying to let go of those regrets.
This is a challenge.

Check and check....and done!
Painted the undercoat of color around nine or so, then cleaned up and busied myself with other things waiting for that to dry suffiently. I was watchful and worried that bubbling might occur again, so I tried to keep my mind off of it as I knew there would be nothing I could do about it if it did happen again.
Several hours later I started in on the LAST COAT! I even painted the wall socket covering for the phone/internet jack before cleaning up the second time! This was about an hour-and-one-half ago.
So far, so good. :)
Tonight Karl and I will move the furniture around into place and begin living with it in a new configuration; dining table in the space outside the library and the arm chairs into what might normally be considered a dining nook. We'll see how we all feel about it for a while, then if it proves too weird to live with, we'll put things back in a more normal placement (dining table in the nook and chairs in the living space).
Pictures will be hung shortly, then I will set about figuring out how to install something low-profile in nature for the purpose of hanging wall quilts along the wide open wallspace.
Woohoo!
8.02.2013
Step one: Check
Oddly enough, today the color looks more brown than deep, deep purple - like the paint chip. Either way, I love the look of it.
Catching up
Everything was moving along fine, then I began to peel the tape at the wall junctions and at the ceiling. Yup, you guessed it! The paint came of in large pieces along the ceiling, and by the time I could get it to stop, several inches were gone! Today will be a day of cleaning up the edges with a blade; using plaster to fill in and smooth it all over; sanding the dry compound; washing the wall down in those areas, then; priming the repaired spots and repainting.
Although, to be truthful with myself, the priming and painting will most likely happen tomorrow. Everything needs drying time, and I don't want any further issues with this paint job!!! Besides, there were also spots in the middle of the wall where it bubbled up and pealed, too, and those will need the same treatment. So I have enough to do with the filling and such to keep me from priming and painting today.
I don't know why this happened, since the first layer went on without any hitches or glitches - this just doesn't make any sense. It was/IS all very frustrating and disappointing, and I washed up everything in a flood of tears last night.
The boys had their own clean-up to attend to, since Hobbes lay down with her tail draped across the lid of the paint can! I couldn't believe it - the one time I grabbed the can to pour more paint in the tray and went right back to work without replacing the can lid!!! Really, Hobbes?!?!?!?
I'm still shaking my head over that one. I'll keep you updated on everything. Sadly. I won't get to move the furniture to it's experimental spots, but that's the breaks I s'pose. Of course, it also means there will be a further delay in hanging the art back on the walls and getting the new quilt pole hung as well.
[heavy sigh]

Mom, call me if you need me -
Attempted to post yesterday, to update you all as to what's been transpiring in my life over the last week (or more), but blogger is again on the fritz. [primal growl] I am going to try and make this brief to avoid any further blogger BS for the day, so I hope you can read between the lines in this abbreviated report.
Arrived home from the U.P. two days ago in time to pick up Karl from his last day of summer semester. He had just taken his final and was ready to leave the building. He was expecting to see Jean there, as she had offered to drive the distance from Clio to Aub Hills to gather him if I couldn't make there myself. THANK YOU, JEAN!
Mom is mending after her [deleted for privacy's sake], that's where I was for the week. Besides that, the timing was right to be there for her birthday, too. Happy birthday, one more time, mom!
The week was a rainy one so I wasn't able to get out and weed whack her driveway (or around her flowerbeds), but it was neat to watch the clouds billowing over Lake Superior.
Brian is looking forward to the start of the Renaissance festival this month, and will be dividing his time between Lowe's during the week, the comic book shop in Fenton, and the festival on the weekends through September.
Thirteen days to go before the start of the quilt show/competition, and sixteen for me before I can attend it and then take my quilt entry home! Can't wait to see it hanging with other entries from around the world and from across the United States!
OK, so let's see if blogger will allow me to post this today, without issue.
Have a good day!

[panic scream]
Do I need to be worried?
Do I get money back if they do not live up to their delivery claim? If they fail to meet the delivery timeline THEY named and guaranteed?
I will drive to Hodgkins, IL if I have to!! That's a warning, UPS. A warning and a promise.

Weee-e-e-e-e-e-l-l-l-l-l-l-lllllll
That's right kids - order a kid's meal and get your food and a pipe filled with hashish...and they'll even light it up for you!
Sheesh. Way to go, Michigan. [forehead smack]
Critter update ('cuz it's sort of weather related)
In the same vein, we are hearing the first locust(s) of the summer this morning - that rain made it all happen. Hoo-boy!
Yes, "again"
The weather only factors in because there has been a change. [grinning madly] It's still humid as all get-out, but it is cooler this morning. With the help of the attic fan thrumming all night long, the inside temp is a manageable 74*F!
Tah-daaaahhhhhhh! And I do mean the "aahhhh" thing. S'wonderful!
We were on the road yesterday afternoon, skirting the rolling storm front (which was over our left shoulders and closing in quickly), until just shy of returning to my little 'burb. Boom!
The lightening, heavy whipping winds, and torrential rains made a violent statement as we cruised to within four miles of the house. Floodgates opened and branches fell left and right, but through all of that, the temps fell, too! Everything still feels wet. Damp and icky, but over the course of the next few days it will dry out some.
The reason we were on the road? Well, to deliver my little quilted beauty into the hands of strangers. Many, MANY strangers! It started off at a UPS storefront in Clarkston, and by later in the evening had only managed to crawl as far as Pontiac. This morning finds it on a truck and actually moving out of the state! No turning back now.
More updates can be followed on the quilting blog. But for now I have some cooler temps to take advantage of, so I am going to get away from the keyboard. How are you going to celebrate the break in the heatwave?
7.18.2013
Watching the weather
Much older. Like....retired-and-toothless-in-Florida old.
I am watching the broadcasts and prediction boards rabidly, scanning the days ahead for signs of substantive relief. All my hopes leaning to anything remotely cooler than low 80s - YES, I'd let myself be happy with low 80s!!
When can we dream of possible relief? When will the temps dip into a comfortable zone again?
It's just hard for me to rationalize being content with a low of 77*F! Yup, our overnight temp got as low as 77*F - and it is the blessing of the day. That, to me, is odd, but a necessary mental trade-off the way things are right now.
We must get through today and tomorrow, though, and then temps should be a little more tolerable for a few days - OK, at least for the predicted, foreseeable future. This is a distinction worth making, since we have so much of the summer season to still get through. After all, more possibility of extreme heat (with humidity) is possible...and probable.
Keep cool, y'all, we are not out of the woods just yet.
7.16.2013
Oh, so nice
While there, I also picked up a couple of fans. One 12" oscillating fan for Karl's room, and one for the sewing area. Still air is the bane of everything! The one I snagged for the lower level is a floor fan standing about 42" or so in height (when fully extended), and 16" in diameter. Wish I had done this weeks ago! Don't know if I've mentioned this before, but it's freakin' hot and steamy!
Beauty part is that when I'm not sewing I will be able to move it quickly and easily to another area for use! Merry Christmas!
Aaaahhhhh-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h. :)
Well, what do you know.

Knowingly made the decision to not roll the AC unit into the house and set it up in the living room window this season, as we have for the past few years. Crazy, I know, but there were many factors involved in that thought process.
Despite the horrible grip of uber heat and humidity hovering over our state (much of the mid-western to eastern US, really), I have only had one moment of self doubt over that AC v no AC decision. Today is really day three of the latest heat wave, but day two with the added humidity. It's crippling, make no mistake, and weather weenie predictions have this hanging around until Friday or Saturday of this week.
We'll see. It's being called the "air you can wear." Very appropriate.
Anyhow, it's good to have space for writing again, but I need to move around before the heat becomes overly oppressive. We have found a rather busy nest of flying, sting-y things entering the house through a crack between the brick facing and old caulking where it meets the wood trim. Emptied a can of spray at them yesterday evening, but that only made a temporary dent in their activities....and hardly touched their numbers, I'm fearing.
I will keep you posted on that and so much more, but I bid you adieu for the time being.

Why is it that ignorant idiots like '[initials]smashmouth' are allowed to defame and lie outright about our President, and have no fear of legal retribution? It (the human in question) posted this tripe: "...low and behold there was the lead story of the Muslim president..." blah-blah-blah "...phony man made global warming garbage..." This is cleary another right-wing, shout-rather-than-listen-or-discuss-or-research-facts-first, knee-jerk, radical asshole reaction to the Zimmerman trial outcome, peppered with add'l misleading and incorrect BS, spewed to create outrage and prove an ignorant non-point. First, you morons, Pres. Obama is NOT a Muslim (sheesh); the words are "lo" and "manmade", and; global warming is not phony, but it IS MOST ASSUREDLY manmade. The animals of the world didn't create the pollution ruining the earth.

One more step
One hurdle achieved.
Another tick on the list attained.
About two weeks ago (yikes!) I received a lovely packet in the mail telling me that PQ1 had been juried into the GR AQS competition, and that I needed to complete the forms contained within and mail it back to them haste. Actually, what the cover letter read was, "...fill these out and send them back NOW."
One of the forms regarded insurance for the quilt - both for shipping and loss replacement should something happen at the show (or during shipping). Lots of cost involved here. Without a proper, legal, binding appraisal, whatever loss might happen would all be on me.
So, without too much delay, I attempted to find a qualified appraiser and gain an appointment in short order. No easy feat here in the mitten state. The quickest thing available found me in Bay City yesterday, and the appraisal was done in about an hour. With all of two weeks now having slipped between my fingers, I must get this bunch of papers back to the AQS gang soon.
The next step is to ship PQ1 to Kentucky, then cross my fingers and say my prayers. August 14th can't get here soon enough! More later, peeps - have a quilty day. :)
P.S. Thanks, Jean, for driving the final leg! I had a fun time meeting your cousin and her son, Doris and Nick, too.

NOW the fireworks can begin!

One active day
In the early evening, Barb and Jean stopped by - armed with ice cream cake! - to celebrate another year of maturity for Karl and Barb. We ordered LL pizza and relaxed and chatted.
Later, Barb kindly reviewed Karl's last math test and spoke with him about it. I am not certain if she was able to identify his more difficult hiccup, but I think she helped him to clearly understand it is within his power to turn the ship around before the end of the semester.
Thank you, Barb!
The evening fell and the humidity rose, so I gave up hope of any quality quilting time...opting to finish up the dishes in the sink and then laze on the sofa, sorting old paperwork and waiting for the evening news just for the weather forecast. Well, I fell asleep and missed it completely!
Now, I've dragged myself upstairs, washed up for bed and am ready to crash mightily.
Have a good night, all. See you tomorrow ~

FINALLY
Aaaargh! I hate this sort of conundrum. I really must get after both of these activities since this lovely, workable weather won't be with us for long.
I am stymied by the lack of hours in a day.
Well, since I now have an appointment with a quilt appraiser in order to complete paperwork for my AQS entry, I suppose the quilting bit should take priority. And, I suppose I can live with the fact that I did manage to spend some time cleaning, dusting, sanding, cleaning again, taping off and mudding newly found areas of craptasticness along the wall to be painted, so I guess I really did manage to stick my mitts in the house repair stuff - even though it wasn't the actual applying of color that I so wanted to get to. [sniff]
Dagnabbit and darnitalmighty!
I now give myself permission to touch the quilting!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Oh, did I remember to say that one of my quilts made it into an AQS contest?!? Wahoo!!!!
6.30.2013
Don't be jealous, but...
OK, you can be jealous if you want to.
6.28.2013
Raucous storms yesterday
Two large branches were taken down - one from the backyard apple tree, and one in the front out of the spreading maple. Somehow I missed seeing the apple limb until a few moments ago. Fortunately no damage was done to any power lines or the house, there's just a mess to contend with.
Somewhere around eight o'clock or so, the power blinked off in a nasty way, and Karl and I set about lighting candles. It wasn't but a few moments later the power was back on and we were 'in business' again, but we left the candles lit until we were certain how the evening was to progress.
Here we are in the light of a new day, and we're finding enough to do around the place to keep us busy for a little while - at least until the next set of storms races through today. Hope all is well at your end of the pond.
6.26.2013
May as well
I totally expected to see another "no thanks, but good luck in the future" letter in the mailbox, as happened earlier this year. That rejection note appeared on the day the AQS stated they would begin mailing out notification letters...so I was prepared to see the early bird envelope in my mailbox last week. I truly was.
Not that I was being a fatalist, mind you, but I suspected the minds behind the jurying of quilts into/out of competition for the AQS were skewed in regards to PQ1. In fact, I had already begun accumulating a list of new shows to enter it into in hopes of having it seen further afield than my own backyard.
So it was with some curiosity (and major trepidation) that I checked the mailbox (some six hours after the delivery truck drove off), only to find absolutely nothing in regards to the quilt show. Same thing on Saturday - so I went through the weekend trying really hard to not think of it in any way, shape, or form. Then Monday arrived.
Brian snagged the mail and brought it to the house saying, "You have something from AQS."
My heart skipped.
"Is it thick or thin?" I asked him.
"It's neither, sort of. It's a large flat envelope," he answered, and I flew up the stairs.
It was a strange way to send a "no thank you" note, so I let myself become a little excited.
"CONGRATULATIONS! The jury has accepted your entry, [PQ1]: Let It Begin With Me, for further consideration in the 2013 AQS Quilt Week contest in Grand Rapids, MI....Your contestant name badge and ribbon are enclosed," the top page read. Yippee!
OK, so after receiving hugs from Bud, and crying a bit, I poured over everything in the packet - over and over and over. Later, I sent out a quick text to family and friends to let them know it's finally happened, and then began receiving texts and calls of congratulations. It was a good day.
I now need to completely remove ALL signs of cat hair from the quilt, check it over and clip stray threads, then make a small adjustment to the sleeve I have been thinking of making (to make the corners and sides hang without waving at all). Once that's done there are other items to deal with...and a small mound of paperwork to immediately fill out and send back before the quilt is packed up and shipped to AQS.
Holy Moses! Guess I may as well get back to work then, eh? :)
Anyhow, that's my week so far, hope your week is going well. More another time.
6.24.2013
Nuts!
I'm going to bake a few potatoes...they're much healthier for you - and I can make 'tater salad when they're 'baked'!
Yes, I'm trying to say it's still hot ! ! !
6.23.2013
Stifling heat
Masterpiece Theater is coming on, so I will console myself with lovely BBC offerings to take my mind off of this heat and transport myself to a better place.
Inspector Lewis, take me away!
6.22.2013
Yeesh!
...on the dashboard of car
...on a sunny day
...with the windows rolled up.
I'm melting....melting.
Too darned hot, people!
I do not enjoy (OR appreciate) warm weather - well, anything hotter than 72*F. Anything north of that in the temperature game is abhorred and unnecessary.
Don't look at me like that, we all know it's true. I'm just the only sane person brave enough to post it out loud.
Sheeeezzz-z-z-z-ah! And now, to add insult (and humidity) to injury, we are going to have rain, too.
Mind you, I love a good rain, but when it's coupled with high heat...no good can come of it. Absolutely none. You can't quilt in that sort of humidity, can't paint walls, can't relax, sleep, breath, get comfy, stay comfy, stay dry, be happy. When things become saturated in humidity, it's just miserable.
Pardon me while I wring out my sofa.
6.21.2013
And the winner is.....
Yup. The paint color preferred this time for the long south wall is a very dark (but not black), deep purple-to-brown. The difference being: THIS time, the entire length of the wall will be all one dark, rich, gorgeous color, and will be completed all at the same time.
*Crap*
I just managed to burst my own happiness bubble by remembering I also have to paint the ceiling in the dining area - as well as the living room - before I can call it 'done.'
Ah, well. One step at a time, I guess. One step at a time.
Polished Leather is going to look snappy with a quilt and several wonderful enlarged photographs, by yours truly, hanging all over it. But I have to hurry along, now. If I'm not quick about it, the coming heatwave is going to zap my momentum, I just know it, and this little project could sit undone for another [name the time frame].
Finger's crossed, photos later.

Goliath
In all honesty, I noticed the crack a few years back, but had turned a blind eye to it for a lot of reasons, but all of that has changed recently. I won't go into it now, just trust me when I say I've hit my limit.
I have been ruing the day I ever began rehabbing/remodeling this typical 1950's ranch-style house. Oh, for lots of reasons, but mainly because of all of the rotten people who I ended up trusting and hiring, and who ultimately let me down. I am a fairly poor judge of character it appears.
All of that a n d it seems repairing one item seems to make another two or three issues come to light.
But this morning, I awoke feeling a bit more hopeful after yesterday's burst of renewed energy.
I moved all of the boxes of stored dinnerware (which still cannot go "home" because that space is nowhere near ready for it), began the drywall repair in a fairly big way, and pared down the color choices to paint that expanse of wall, the adjoining joist-into-hallway wall (and the living room ceiling) to no more than five colors! Two for the overall wall, two possibles for the ceiling and maybe two for the joist (but one of those is a very strong contender)!
"That's six!", you yell.
Hey, I can count. Don't worry, my math is sound - two of those are the same color for different purposes...so it's all good.
Trust me, this is a big change. It's a BIG commitment. I've had it with the 'someday' attitude I've fallen into! I want my house back!
At any rate, with all of the moving, vacuuming, and prep cleaning, I disturbed a spider. A wolf spider. Hey, it was bound to happen.
In fact, it was a very large wolf spider.
I didn't see anything of him all day yesterday, but I had my suspicions we would meet one day when I found a lot of cobweb-y stuff.
"How large?" you wonder.
Let me just say when I caught sight of him running an Olympic sprint across the half wall very early this morning - and he was pulling a VW Beetle behind him at the time - he was astounding! He was booking, baby!
I mean to say he was one of the largest I had ever seen indoors or out, and superfast. Why he stopped moving when I approached him with a shoe is beyond me; except, maybe because he has been living in this house for an apparently good long time, he was most likely used to the noises and comings and goings. Nothing was going to faze this Godzilla arachnid, least of all a freaked out fat woman with a sneaker.
And I truly believe this spider was also probably the one who moved the frig away from the wall one night!
Yes, THAT large! I'm telling you........even Flop wouldn't approach it, and she loves chasing down bugs and spiders when she spies one. LOVES it!
My big fear right now is that this eight-legged behemoth may have been a mommy and not a dude. So, do I need to worry about revenge from a hoard of angry gargantuan babies any time in the near future?
6.16.2013
One thing more
? ? ?
Really? Is this some sort of new diet thing kids are doing now? Energy drinks and pudding?
I don't wanna know..........I think.
Weird.
Physical pursuits
Spent the early part of this weekend engaged in physical acts of sweatiness and grunting. Oh, for Heaven's sake...get your minds out of the gutter!
After correcting another egregious attack on my meager financial holdings at the bank (which took forever, by the way), I headed north to help a friend begin the nitty-gritty cleaning chores of a property she hopes to sell. Because of the long line of loan customers (who receive preferential attention AND can make appointments, which supersede those of us already in line waiting to speak with someone regarding our account issues), I was later arriving than I wanted to be.
And, I was not the happiest camper.
When I arrived, Jean was hard at work in the bathroom and had already mopped the breezeway floor to within an inch of its life. I cleaned out a portion of dishes from the cupboard and whatnot, then suggested that maybe a fresh pair of muscles and aggravation should set to work on the stubborn stains in the tub. That seemed to do the trick.
After annihilating the country rust, we divided and conquered other areas of the house. The wood living room walls and ceiling are dust- (and spiderweb-) free, thank you very much, and I managed to irritate (then kill) a few residents of the creepy crawly sort along the way. SCORE!
It wasn't long before we called it a day and headed for a more lazy posture.
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
Jean showed me all of the surg hats she managed to create on her school break; an astounding number of really cute hats that will sell quickly at the hospital! We ordered a pizza and watched a little TV before turning in for the night.
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
Saturday morning found us bushy-tailed (if not bright-eyed), and we readied ourselves for a long day of driving and moving furniture. Her lovely doctor daughter (or, is it daughter doctor?) was moving from her groovy residency residence to Maine for work, so we were heading to K'zoo to help her get rid of the items not traveling with her to lobster-land.
Had the chance to meet her boyfriend and a sweet doctor friend - both very wonderful people, much like Carrie (doctor daughter)...so no surprise there. We actually kibitzed our way through lunch at a great GREEK diner in K'zoo before getting started on the heavy stuff. Too much laughing - more so than eating - but no complaints.
We all loaded a small moving van; chit-chatted a bit; said our goodbyes and parting 'nice-to-have-met-yous,' then; off we went one more time. The road was our mistress yesterday, without a doubt.
Once back on the expressway, we headed first for Lansing to drop off a heavy piece of furniture, then proceeded to Jean's home to unload the rest into storage.
~ I want to thank Dr. Carrie for the dining table and chairs. They are going to fit perfectly in my dining space at the end of the kitchen! I simply need to paint the walls before making that happen - but I am more than incentivized!! Currently scheming of the perfect design for your wall hanging, girlie. ;)
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
This morning I am stiff but very eager to remain in any non-sitting positions as much as possible. Don't know what the day has in store exactly, but I'm thinking it'll be something to do with finishing priming the dining area walls and hanging the planned art for the arrival of the 'new' table and chairs! It's supposed to rain later this afternoon, so I will have to work somewhat quickly.
So, I guess....more physical pursuits.
Thanks, again, Carrie and Jean!
More later. Photos when I can. :)

Ugh....humidity
Can't write on paper.
Can't handle sitting on damp-feeling furniture. Ick!
We've finally crossed that weather line-in-the-sand from winter-to-spring, but it seems as though we crossed right over spring and landed smack dab in the throes of summer. The temperatures never really settled on anything too seasonally springlike here in the northern mid-west, and it hasn't been any too normal in other weather-related ways, either.
But the whole weather powerstruggle of winter/summer/winter/spring/winter/winter/something/summer has finally erupted into (apparently) summer. [heavy sad sighing]
There's been an abundance of rain, which could be a good thing if it fell over a period of time instead of all at once. But, our waterways are in desperate need of recouping what has been lost over time, so here in MI we'll take what we can get.
P.S. - if somebody reading this knows the person in charge of the heavenly earth thermostat, please pass on the word that I wouldn't be opposed to having the temperatures set on the low end of the summer spectrum for the remainder of June, July, August and September. Too much heat with all this rain is just sticky, tacky, icky in a house with no AC. Thanks!
"E-cigarettes" - c'mon!
Seriously. Looky, world - a different way to enjoy your addiction to nicotine.
Yes, it may be a somewhat 'healthier' way to imbibe in a tobacco-less smoke, but it still isn't sexy, nor has it been determined to be a totally safe alternative.
Try chewing gum and willpower, people!

One month and counting
For my birthday I gave myself one month "off" for good behavior.
Well, what does "good behavior" have to do with it? Not a thing, actually. I simply decided to stay off of the disappointing treadmill of FB BS for a month to see if my attitude improved, my expectations mellowed, or my reactions to perceived slights and outright rudeness abated a bit.
I highly doubt any of that would be the case, so I am still sans the ol' fb for a while longer. Tell me, has any of the self-aggrandizing twaddle (or the ignoring others' announcements and whatnot) calmed a bit? I doubt that much as well.
It's been nearly seven weeks...and I'm still counting. AND I'm still standing.
Take that, FB!
Neighbors.
Lying ex-husbands.
Cheating ex-husbands.
Philandering bosses.
Diddling uncles.
Contractors of ALL sorts who take your money & don't accomplish half of what they're paid for.
Hospitals that add charges for services not rendered & that allow doctors to roam the halls signing patient charts without ever seeing the patient. And let's not forget double billing for ER docs.
Men who are fathers who don't act like it. Losers who duck out on their parental responsibility and are absent for much of the formative years. Snip, snip, fellas.
Would-be employers who tell you that they were looking for a younger person during the interview process.
Those who drive someones car with a handicap plate or sign, and then park in handicap spots because they think it's OK. LAZINESS IS NOT A HANDICAP!
People who smoke on campus despite all the signage saying it's a COMPLETELY smoke-free zone.
Judges who dismiss your work as a copy of something else without checking facts or dates.
Cats that whiz outside the box when the damned thing is fresh.
People who throw their cigarette butts out a car window. YOU HAVE ASHTRAYS IN YOUR CARS!!!
People who use the race card...right off the bat - for e v e r y encounter. Hey, if you're stupid it really has nothing to do with your color or ethnicity. Stupid is stupid - deal with it and fix yourself!
I'm certain there are more, but I am tired...and I'm pretty sure you get the idea.
Maybe tomorrow I will feel better, but you will all still be here. So. . . . . . . . .the effing world can eat my shorts!

Lost and found
The process of totally putting away one project while it's under construction is not a simple act. Especially at the scale of VGS, but it needed doing.
By the end of the day I had only piles of pieces to cut, and those I sorted into gallon zipbags. Over time I will work on cutting the chunks and strips in those bags into 1"x1" pieces, neatly sorted by color and ready for use when I uncrate the beast within. 'Til then, I will have to console myself with losing time on my treasured quilt project and find someplace to store the large blue box!
In the meanwhile, I intend to pick up lost projects and finish them before allowing myself to find time to invest in such a lofty quilt project.

My bad
Yes - he passed his first test! Initially, he had a C+ grade, but seemed dissatisfied with that grade. He was looking forward to averaging the same sort of grades as he had in the first math class, but since this is advanced (and therefore more complicated) algebra, it makes sense that it might not come as easily, or with the same results for the lad.
At any rate, I suggested he take his test and the math notes - and work leading up to it - in to his next tutoring session to see where his issue may lie, to see if Justin (his tutor) can help Karl over his hurdles, thereby making it easier to pass the next test. You know, get Karl (and keep him) par with what was coming at him in class.
My thought is if you have working knowledge of the sequence of formulation, factoring and figuring for algebra, then you should be able to move through the more complicated problems. But, if you have a hiccup early on, then getting the more complicated stuff will be, well....more complicated.
So, Karl went in to tutoring armed to the teeth to review his test and see where he needed a little help grasping whatever it was that had eluded him.
The two boys found two problems which had been answered correctly, but which the instructor had incorrectly marked wrong! Karl finished his tutoring session having mastered a concept (with Justin's help) that stumped him, AND with the knowledge that he could perhaps raise his grade for the test a little by asking the instructor to review those two problems the boys found to be graded wrong.
Guess what?! She did see the issues with the two problems in question, and re-graded Karl's test accordingly, which bumped his grade from that C+ to a B- !!! This made Karl very proud - and rightly so!
Need I say I am proud, too? Well, I am!

On to Brian news. Arrived home the other day to find Bud with an impressive bandage on his left forearm.
"A bandage!", you gasp.
Yes, and here's the story. He cut his forearm on a poorly stored blade he found "the hard way," while searching for something he had dropped on the floor under his desk. Yes, he placed the blade (some time ago) into the flap of a cardboard box, then stacked the box with something else, then, well.....you get the picture, right? He forgot completely about the blade, then made contact with it while prowling around under his desk.
The "contact" made was with his forearm, and the results were a fairly deep sub-q cut (but not to the muscle) which required something in the order of 10 stitches to close.
Wheeee!! Oh, and yes, I did do the mommy-thing and suggest (strongly) to Brian I thought this might be a good time to clean his room.
So, it's been slightly eventful here. How's things at your end of the swamp?

People. Go figure.
Nothing to do with me.
No questions; no suggestions (terse or otherwise) regarding a previous issue I may have posted; no "how-do-you-do" or similar pleasantries.
Just an invitation. Yes, I am aware Stevie Nicks said: "Just an invitation would have been just fine," but in this case....it wasn't.
Woo me! Yes, I used the word "woo."
- - - - Sorry, I seem to have wandered off topic.
Wait, I think I may have misspoken, too. In fact, this annoying 'comment' was a suggestion - after a fashion.
The non-comment comment said simply: "you are invited to follow my blog" (Yes, I included the punctuation he used.)
Well, I am pretty certain if I wanted to follow a blog I wouldn't have to wait for an invitation. Most folks would be happy to have others flock to their blog and click on the old "follow" button without having to ask. But to troll the blogways and willy-nilly tell people "you are invited to follow my blog" without the thoughtfulness of the act of reciprocity, well.....[sputtering and harrumphing].
Where's the rationale'? Where's the touch of friendliness....the human interaction of the suggested transaction?
See, here's the thing -
If you are already counting several hundred (or thousand) people who 'follow' your blog, and you are inviting someone else to join in, try an email invitation as opposed to a fake comment. Start a 'conversation' instead of employing the Jehovah's witness tactics and methodology, Steve, and allow those new acquaintances to make their own decisions based on other factors over the course of a few emails.
Personally, I tend to respond better to a straightforward and honest approach.
Of course, if you tip-toe and pussyfoot around a subject I tend to 'get' that sort of thing too, but I prefer to get to know someone using a variety of information, and I make my decisions based on a lot of external data. I shy away from overt BS and those using overt BS. I make exceptions for friends because, by the time they are friends, you have come to know and understand all of the cues and subtleties (and not-so subtleties) of the friendship dynamic.
By the way, when your reply to my "no thank you" response to your (initial) 'comment' arrived from an alter-email-ego named "Steve Player".....I thought to myself, "case closed!"
Steve PLAYER. Such an anything-but-Christian nom de plume.
Yes, by all means, share the word of God, but try introducing yourself in a different way. Hammers and caveman clubs don't get it for me. Maybe it works on those more simpleminded or less cynical.

So it's June, is it?
Oh, it's not because he too has passed, but because he chooses to not recognise me as his daughter. Consequently, I don't have a father to send cards to and mark holidays and milestones with any longer.
His choice.
His loss.
I do believe I have a new friend or two celebrating a birthday today, so I will instead focus my thoughts and best wishes in their direction - that oughtta fill the void.
And if that doesn't work, I can always keep cleaning. The cats have seen fit this morning to keep my day full of activity and mess. God bless 'em. It began with Flop spewing upstairs. I was awakened by the undeniable gurking sounds of a feline making hairball pudding.
After cleaning mess one; parts one and two, I was reminded that feeding was the next order of the day - and why hadn't I gotten to it, yet? Loud insistent meowing (Hobbes-style - she knows one word) drove me to the kitchen, where cat food was distributed to the hungry throng.
Having completed that chore, I followed my 'downstairs nose' to the cat box. Someone had tinkled over the edge (per usual, at least one time per week), and most of a bladderful load of urine sat precariously in the fold of the liner's edge. Deftly, I sopped up most of it with a paper towel before carefully rolling the bag liner up and over into itself, finding -- you guessed it....another bladder of pee on the other side!
This explained the odor that usually doesn't live in the house.
New liner installed and fresh litter in place, I felt disaster had been averted.
Walking away to wash my hands I was met by a sweetly curious Cleo, who was making her way quickly to the bathroom. I felt good about treating her to the first use of a fresh litter box. She had beaten the other two to first use privileges!
Mounting the stairs I heard a curious (and bone-chilling sound). I turned on my heals and rushed to see Cleo standing in the box but too close to the side, and she wasn't squatting to urinate. Yup. She was now a fuzzy fountain, shooting a healthy stream of endless cat pee over the edge and onto the dry floor!!!
Back to the drawing board and paper towel (and bleach). Apparently she had held her bladder since 1979, because there were flood level waters there to clean.
So....Happy Birthday to all of you June first-ers out there. You go have fun, I'll man the cat box for the day.

Finally
I know a number of you who love the month of May. And to all those lovely May babies out there, please don't take offense, but I am simply tired of May 2013. Tired of it I tell ya! Lord help me, but it has seemed to go on forever this year, and enough is enough already!
I suppose my bah-humbuggedness is mostly due to the weather, but sheesh! What a mess this May has been - and ending on a warmer-than-necessary steamy note has really taken its toll. It really has.
So, good riddance, May. Hit the bricks. Start walking. Make tracks. Am-scray already! See ya in 2014, when I hope you are ready to play by spring rules.

Oh yeah.
PS - it's raining a-g-a-i-n.

"Too"
Too humid, which means it's -
Too muggy. Ugh, uck, eh-ehhhhewww.
Too tired of sitting in this chair...already.
Too-oh-tally going to find something else to do for a bit.
[ ^ too bad if you didn't like the liberties I took with that last one]

For those of you "in the know"
Bud was having an issue getting from his home improvement employer his first full paycheck. I know!!
The run-around he received from the HR/Payroll person on site was ridiculous, to say the least. The crux of the matter left him with this decision (per that Payroll/HR bimbo): Brian could pay a $25 stop pay fee to have them re-issue his paycheck.
Yup, you read that right. HE would have to pick up the tab for their stupidity and carelessness. So, after two days of sporadic discussion here and there, he went in this morning to speak with the store manager before his shift began, and to question this awfully strange pay protocol for employees.
Why would the employee have to pay for a check they never touched, never saw, never had a chance to misplace?
I know, I hear you - "What!?? What's the other option? Where's the decision making?"
The "or" in all of this was to wait and see if and when the check ever materialized at some time in the future.
Well, the long and the short of it is that Lowe's will eat the fee to stop pay, and will immediately issue a paycheck, which I trust will now be direct deposit instead. My only concern is that Bud check the online system available to see his hours and to be certain the payroll amount shows up with the correct tax amounts withheld and no other surprise gaps equalling $25.
This mistrust has a firm foundation.
Anyhow, yea, Brian! Way to confront the BS!
